Static Riser Hold

The static riser hold is an isometric hold using a riser tool, training the raw finishing strength a top roll needs at the exact moment you're pinning an opponent's hand down — the part of the technique dynamic exercises alone don't fully prepare you for.

Muscles Worked

Wrist extensors, forearm

Equipment

Riser tool

How to Do It

  1. 1Attach the riser to a cable or band
  2. 2Raise your knuckles and thumb to the top position
  3. 3Hold with the wrist fully raised

Sets & Reps

3-4 sets · 10-20 seconds hold

Coaching Tips

  • Movement is toward the thumb (radial) side
  • Breathe steadily — don't hold your breath through the hold

Common Mistakes

  • Only training the dynamic riser/pronation exercises and skipping isometric holds, missing the finishing-strength component of a top roll
  • Holding with a bent wrist instead of the locked position the actual top-roll finish uses
